A Word From Kinnan

Healthy Cooking Demonstration at Daves SupermarketHi! I'm Kinnan Dowie, I'm twelve years old, and I am very excited and proud to be representing my home state of Rhode Island at the upcoming "Kid's State Dinner" at the White House! I still can't believe how lucky I was to receive such an honor!
I started cooking when I was really little. I've always loved helping my mom and grandmother in the kitchen. I really enjoy getting creative with food, it's so much fun to try new things! My mom and I like to make a lot of international foods. Some of my favorite things to make are Australian meat pies and middle Eastern rolled grape leaves. I also love cooking Mexican and Italian foods! I really enjoy watching PBS cooking shows and learning new techniques.  Cooking is such a great way to connect with other cultures. Cooking also makes me feel really close to my family. I would like to just keep practicing and get better and better with my techniques and food creations! The Healthy Lunchtime Challenge has really inspired me to seek out the healthy alternatives when cooking. I've found you really don't have to sacrifice your health to have food taste great - you just have to be a bit more creative - exactly what I love to do!!!

Thank You so much for your support!!!

Twelve-year-old Kinnan Dowie. a sixth grade homeschooled student from Rhode Island, has won the right to represent his state at the White House's "Kid's State Dinner" on July 18, 2014.   Kinnan has always loved cooking with his mom and grandmother, so when Epicurious and the White House announced the Healthy Lunchtime Challenge, he set to work. He took over the kitchen and experimented for hours. He came up with an original recipe of Mediterranean Kebab Wraps with cilantro tabbouleh!

His family loved the results so he submitted his recipe. To everyone's absolute amazement, he received an incredible email informing him that he had won! He was ecstatic!! It is such an honor for him to have been invited to the White House and to be able to represent his state! He will receive two round-trip tickets and one night accommodation as part of his prize. What we are trying to raise funds for are all of the incidentals that come with making such a trip. (clothes appropriate for lunch at the White House, transportation and meals in D.C., etc.) We are also hoping that his mom and older and younger brother will be able to rent a vehicle to be able to drive down to Washington D,C, and support Kinnan in his incredible once-in-a-lifetime experience!

His dad has been unemployed for nearly six years after suffering an extremely adverse reaction to taking an antibiotic that resulted in a  debilitating condition Kinnan's mom cares for his dad and for her mother who is 81 and suffers from multiple health issues. Money is extremely tight and there is not a lot of room for any extras. The family, like many, have had to go without a lot of things, but there's no shortage of love and support!
